Is it safe?

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, veterinary acupuncture is a valid modality of treatment within the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery. Acupuncture should be performed by a licensed and trained veterinarian. It is one of the safest modes of treatment and it is safe to combine with almost all other forms of treatment. Side effects are uncommon but do occur. A pet might experience lethargy, sleepiness, or a worse condition for 24-48 hours following treatment. After this time, there is often an improvement in the pet’s condition.

Does it hurt?

The small size of the needle in smaller animals is minimally painful. The larger the needle and animal, the more discomfort might be noticed as the needle penetrates the skin and stimulates the indicated acupuncture point. Once in the skin, there should be no discomfort felt at all. Some sensations may be experienced such as tingling, pressure, and cramping (experienced by people) when the needle is placed through the skin and the activated point. This can be perceived as discomfort in some patients but usually only lasts a few seconds. Most small and large animals do not feel any significant pain and may relax or even fall asleep during treatment.

For what conditions is it indicated?

Acupuncture can be used for a variety of different conditions, ranging from painful musculoskeletal conditions and skin allergies to paralysis. Acupuncture can be used chronically as well to provide regular maintenance care and to keep the body balanced, the tendons and ligaments strong and healthy, and the mind sharp. It can help to stimulate nerves, relieve pain, increase blood circulation, and release helpful hormones.
